Ethel Virginia Menditto, (nee Thumm) of Danbury, CT, formerly of Yonkers, NY passed away in her home on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the age of 100 years. She was born in the Bronx, NY on March 25, 1917 to the late John and Elinor (Falvey) Thumm. Ethel was raised in Yonkers, NY with her loving brothers Raymond and John (Jack) who predeceased her and her beautiful sisters, Helen and Mary who also predeceased her, and the “baby sister” Eleanor. She was married to the late Edward Menditto and is survived by daughter Mary (Richard) Fontana, grandson Richard, (Liz) Fontana, great grandson Jackson, granddaughter Diane, great-grandchildren Michael and Andrea Micik. She was lovingly known as GiGi. Also surviving is a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Ethel was very proud of her work as teller with the Bank of New York and retired after 32 years. During that time her loyal customers would seek her out for banking assistance and friendship. She and her husband Eddie spent many happy times in Connecticut visiting with family, packing the car up with “provisions” for the ride from Yonkers. They were devout Catholics and for many years were active members of the Knights of Columbus and the Columbiettes, performing works of charity and raising funds for scholarships. Cruises to warm locales with friends were treasured and they entertained the family with movie nights showing slides and telling tales of their vacation. Ethel and her sister, Mary shared a close bond from childhood and she moved to Connecticut after the passing of her husband. The two of them were affectionately called “the Golden Girls”. Ethel will be remembered by her family for her generosity, her love of family and her many shopping adventures.
In lieu of flowers, family kindly requests a donation be sent to Regional Hospice and Palliative Care, 30 Milestone Rd., Danbury, CT 06810.
