Eileen was born on April 1, 1948 to Daniel Looney and Mae Looney (nee Flynn) in Bronx, New York. She was predeceased by her sister, Sr. Joan Looney, O.P, a former member of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. Eileen is survived by her children, John (Rachel) Spencer and Jennifer (Adam) Truax; grandchildren, Madeline, William, Jack and Claire; ex-husband, John Spencer, former mayor of Yonkers; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Eileen was raised in the Bronx, living in close proximity to her cousins, Patrick and Ellen, who were her first best friends. She graduated from Saint Nicholas of Tolentine High School in 1965, and for several years worked as an administrative assistant in Manhattan. Eileen moved to Yonkers after her marriage in 1971, and raised her children, John and Jennifer. She was the most loving and supportive mother a child could ever ask for. Since 1999, she was proud to work as the Assistant to the President of Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers. Eileen made many close friends in Yonkers, and referred to them lovingly as “The Gang.” She became an avid tennis player at the Amackassin Club, and won several doubles championships. Eileen always had a ready and beautiful smile for friends and strangers alike, and was considered by all those who knew her as one of the nicest people they had ever met. She was also tough and brave, enduring two struggles with cancer, including the first, in 2011, which she survived. As such, she considered the last seven years of her life to be a gift from God, during which time she doted on her children and grandchildren, providing them with countless cherished memories and enduring love. Visiting hours will be at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home on Friday 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church on Saturday September 1st at 9:30am. Interment will follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery
Eileen was a strong supporter of efforts to combat and defeat childhood cancer. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation, 1787 Route 6, Carmel, NY 10512 (thetlcfoundation.org).
