David J. Kenney, a lifelong resident of Yonkers passed away on 12/22/2012. Born March 7th 1918 to David and Mary (Connors) Kenney, he attended St. Joseph’s Elementary School, and graduated from Saunders Trade School. During the Great Depression, he augmented his family’s resources by caddying at local golf courses. So began his enduring love of the sport, and his ongoing quest to improve his game. He played baseball with the Redwing Club. He worked in the Alexander Smith Carpet Mills (“the Carpet Shop”) before joining the United States Army. He served in the Third Army in France and Germany as a Medic, and in that role he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and later, the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp. Following World War II, he worked as a machinist at the Anaconda Wire and Cable Company. On November 6, 1948, he married his beloved Loyola Ryan. In the mid-60’s, he joined the IBM Corporation, where he worked in security and facilities management.
He participated in church and community activities, including serving as a Little League umpire, and as a member of the Holy Name and Nocturnal Adoration Societies at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart. He was an active member of the Amackassin Club, The Alan F. Waite American Legion Post, and V.F.W Post 1666. He enjoyed attending reunions of his Army unit, and attended the dedication of the WWII Memorial with eight family members in May of 2004. He and Loy traveled often and far, visiting family and friends in distant parts of the country. He also made frequent golf outings, sometimes traveling with son Dave and his Hobbit friends. He often played the links of Ireland, and at the age of 92, traveled to Scotland to play several courses there. He was an avid reader of newspapers and historical material.
He was predeceased by Loyola, sisters Loretta, Catherine and Hannah, and brother Richard. He is mourned by his children and their spouses, Chris and Kevin (O’Rourke), Susan and Michael (Henry), David and Barbara, and Maura and Greg (Rast). He will be missed by his grandchildren Meagan Kenney, Wyatt Henry, Tyler, Molly and Sam Rast, and by his step-grandchildren Katelin O’Rourke Gorman and Michael Gorman and Kevin and Jenna O’Rourke. He is survived by his elder sister Florence Lues, and many nieces and nephews.
