Alfred was born on July 27th, 1930 to Carl Sr. and Rhea Jenkins. He grew up attending the Yonkers Public Schools. Affectionately, he was called Al , Pop Pop or AJ.
During his high school days, Al was a well-known track star for Yonkers High School where earned Letter recognition for 2 years consecutive years on the Varsity Team in Long Distance. After graduation, Alfred enlisted in the US Army from 1947-1950. He served as a military policeman for the 565th MP Company and received the Medal of Occupational Service of Japan. Compelled to support his fellow Americans, Al re-enlisted into the US Air Force and served during the Korean War. There he was decorated with the Medal of National Defense Service Medal for Good Conduct on October 29th, 1953.
After, an honorable discharge of service, Alfred Jenkins married Sylvia Cozart. From this union they had two loving children Deborah Ann Jenkins and Alfreda Wells. Both daughters preceded their parents in life.
On April 20th, 1957 Alfred married Shirley Ann Gibson. From this union they raised his two older daughters and had four children Alfred Jr., Tyrone, Crystal and Carl “Chubby”.
Professionally, Alfred worked for the City of Yonkers Department of Public Works for over 30 years and retired in 1994. Simultaneously, Al also served as an Auxiliary Police Officer for 30 years and received the rank of Deputy Chief. In his spare time, Al freelanced as a skilled self-taught carpenter.
Mr. Jenkins served also was a role model in the community for many young men in the city. He worked with several sports organizations like the Pacoys Boys Club, Whitney M. Young Community Organization and one of his favorites, the King and Queens AC Club, in which he co-founded.
Alfred Jenkins was a proud member of the Samuel H. Dow American Legion Post #1017 of Yonkers, New York, a member of the US Air Force Association World War II Charter Memorial Member. Also, he enjoyed watching sports, sitting by the Yonkers Waterfront and loved family outings.
Cherished loved ones to who will remember his loving spirit are the following; Adult children, Alfred Jr. (Diane) Jenkins of Oakwood, Georgia, Crystal Cardwell of Suwanee, Georgia, and Carl (Tonya) Jenkins of New City, New York; grandchildren Carl Lee Jr. (Alicia) Green of Yonkers, New York, Stephanie Wells-Simmons (Tyrone), Robert Snead, Wynter Cardwell, Justin Alabi, Ta’Tiana Jenkins and Chelsea Jenkins and great-granddaughter “Lil” Debbie Ann Green. He is predeceased by his wife, Shirley, daughters Alfreda and Deborah and son Tyrone.
Additionally, he is survived by his brother Arthur (Uncle Sweets) Jenkins, sister Barbara (Aunt Bobby) and Billy Bagley, both of Yonkers, New York. He is predeceased by his sisters Florence (Tata) Jenkins, Evelina (Doll) King, Margaret (Peggy) Tuthill, Dorothy Brown, Elizabeth (Bet) Jenkins, and Gloria (Aunt Booty) Baltrip and his brothers Carl Jr. and Thomas. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends to remember his time on earth.
