Yarmouth - William Gore "Billy" Soule, 70, died at Maine Medical Center on May 3, 2014. The son of William Enos Soule and Jean Root "Polly" Soule, formerly of Yarmouth, he was born April 30, 1944.
His parents devoted their lives to Billy's integration into family and community, to the fullest extent possible, at.a time when developmental disabilities were neither well understood nor socially accepted.
He left home at the tender age of seven to attend the Devereux Schools in Devon, PA until he was sixteen. He later served as a trusted courier at Pineland Hospital in New Gloucester before moving to the Noyes Home in South Portland where he lived for nearly 25 years. After several years at home assisting his elderly mother, he moved to a Spurwink home in West Buxton where he enjoyed participating in firewood processing. Most recently, he was wonderfully supported and cared for by the dedicated staff members of Creative Work Systems and Goodwill's Lifeworks.
Billy always looked forward to holidays and summers at his family home on Prince's Point in Yarmouth helping with house and yard work, swimming, boating, picnicking, ice skating, bowling, playing ping pong, croquet, and shooting pool. He loved parties when he could sport a coat and tie and pass hors d'oeuvres knowing that only afterwards could he help himself to any of the goodies. He will be remembered for his impeccable manners, his passion for music, especially "oldies," his precise memory for dates, his delight in lobster stew and sweets, and his keen interest in the latest weather reports.
He was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Wallace "Maggie" Soule of Yarmouth. Survivors include his sister, Mary S. LeMaistre (Andre) of Mitchell Ledge Farm in Freeport; a nephew, P. Henchman Soule LeMaistre (Valerie) of Scottsdale, AZ; three nieces: Lydia J. Strong (Robert) of Hampden; Olivia W. LeMaistre and Ursula H. Wilmot (Warren) both of Freeport; three grand-nieces and six grand-nephews.
His family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the many family, friends, and professionals who embraced Billy's unique character and helped him along the way. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Creative Work Systems, 619 Brighton Avenue, Portland, ME, 04102 .
