Born in Hill, NH, she was the daughter of the late William and Alice (Hudson) Thistle. She was the wife of the late James L. King who passed away in 1999. Sylvia was a resident of Rochester, NY for 66 years where she worked as a customer service representative at Eastman Kodak Company from 1972 until she retired in 1988.
A beloved member of her community, Sylvia was a faithful member in the Greece United Methodist Church for over 60 years where she served in a variety of staff and volunteer positions including Administrative Assistant, Educational Assistant and Secretary of the UM Women Executive Committee. Sylvia also served on the Memorial Committee, worked tirelessly at the church’s annual bazaars and coordinated luncheons at the church following funerals.
Sylvia had a heart for visitation and outreach, sent countless cards and personal notes to those with health concerns and shut-ins, volunteered at the Edna Tina Wilson Living Center as well as supported many local charities. Sylvia is lovingly remembered for her warm, outgoing personality, sense of humor, innate kindness, strong Christian faith and devotion to family. Sylvia enjoyed a full life spending quality time with family and friends, playing cribbage, gardening, bird-watching and baking her famous chocolate chip cookies.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Merely) Krol of Churchville, NY, Sandra (Richard) Valliere of Freedom, NH; step-children, Deborah (Gary) Hahn of Ft. Myers, FL, David (Joanne) King of Rochester, NY; eight grandchildren, Marisa Krol of Rochester, NY, Grayson (Rebekah) Krol of Lockport, NY, Laura (Rachel) Boutin of Yarmouth, ME, Marla (David) Poytinger of Milwaukee, WI, Andrea (Matthew) Fitzgibbon of Plymouth, MI, Rebecca (Derek) DeSol of Fairport, NY, Jeffrey (Karie) King of Albany, NY, Melaina (fiancé Luke Johnson) King of Sacramento, CA; seven great-grandchildren, Hudson Krol, Elliott Boutin, Micah and Theo Poytinger, Ellia and Evelyn Fitzgibbon and Henry King and nieces and nephews.
All are invited to attend Sylvia’s Celebration of Life Ceremony on Saturday, January 18 at 1:00 PM at the Greece United Methodist Church at 1924 Maiden Lane, Rochester. Burial will be at Union Parma Cemetery in Parma, NY.
