After a courageous battle with cancer, Scott X. Dunham, of Freeport died on March 14, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
Scott was born January 23, 1943, in Portland, Maine to Elmer and Mary K. Dunham. He graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1961 and The University of Maine at Orono in 1965. From 1969-70, he served in the US Army 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam. After the Army, Scott taught in Ledyard, Connecticut, Hamilton, Massachusetts, and for thirty years at Richmond, Maine Middle School. During summers and after retirement, he drove a truck for local paving companies.
Scott was an outstanding athlete, who excelled at baseball and basketball at North Yarmouth Academy and the University of Maine. He still holds the Western Maine Tournament record for foul shot completions in three games. At the University of Maine, he was President of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity. He also served as President of the Richmond Education Association. Scott belonged to American Legion Post #83 in Freeport, AMVETS Post #2 in Yarmouth, and Eagles Aerie 4131 in New Gloucester.
He had many interests. He enjoyed photography and music and was a member of the Bluegrass Music Association of Maine. He loved to kayak and canoe and belonged to the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club. An avid gardener, Scott took delight in showing off his flowers and tomato plants. He was an ardent about Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox, and spent winter months in Bradenton, Florida, where he could watch spring training.
But Scott’s greatest passion was puns. From high school on, he made people laugh and groan—often at the same time—with his word play. In 1997, he published Pundamental Humor from Maine, and went on to write over fifty books of puns and other word games. Right up until a few days before his death, he was posting a daily pun on Facebook to an appreciative audience.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley Dunham; nieces Mary Morton, Debra Davis, Kathy Coronado, Hylari Dunham, and Maura Dunham Towns; nephews Wayne, Don, and Derek Dunham, and great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents as well as his brothers Elmer, Wayman, Robert, Rodney, and Richard who died on March 17 of this year.
Scott was especially close to his nephew-by-marriage George Libby, George’s two sons, George Junior and Michael, and their children. George and his sons looked after Scott during the last stages of his illness.
The family would like to thank Brentwood Center for Health and Rehabilitation and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their care and support.
A Celebration of Scott’s life will be held on April 8, 2018 at the AmVets Robert W. Boyd Post 2, 148 North Road, Yarmouth, Maine, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
