Sally Jane Farquharson Davey

Sally F. Davey (nee Sara Jane Farquharson) was born October 1, 1932 in Manchester, New Hampshire. She grew up in New Britain Connecticut with her brother, John, and her parents, Marguerite (Peggy) and Erving (Hoop). Her family came to Kezar Lake to vacation when Sally was a teenager. She spent time at the north end of the lake then but her heart found a home at the south end at Camp Conifer. She met Peter S. Davey while working at Conifer and set her sights on him for the long run. She spent a restless year at the University of Vermont and then came back to Maine and married Peter at the age of 19. She never regretted her choice because she loved Peter and his family. Their union resulted in five children (Lynn Davey Wunder of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Michael Davey of Yarmouth, Maine; John Peter Davey of Upton Mass.; Jennifer Davey (Fisk) of Thetford Vermont; and Mary Ellen Davey of Alachua, Florida) and three grandchildren (Mollie Wunder, Peter Davey and Megan Davey). Peter died in 1988 due to his life-long struggle with muscular dystrophy.

Sally and Peter took over the running of Conifer from Peter’s parents, Ted and Keinath. Times changed and between the cost of putting five children through college and Peter’s disability they decided to sell Conifer, keeping a small lot on which to build a modern, comfortable home. Much of Conifer is still the same due to their vision that it be so, but also due to Sally’s involvement in Town activities. She participated in most groups in Lovell over the years, including School Boards, the Helen R. Coe Fund, youth groups, and the Kezar Lake Association, among many others. Her two main passions outside her family were birding and antiques. She ran an antiques business until her health began to fail in 2004. She learned an appreciation for nature from the Davey family and with Keinath learned the bird songs. Sally was a member of the American Birding Association and attended many National conventions.

Sally loved her place in Lovell society. She was a natural leader and chaired many of the Boards she served on and genuinely enjoyed being involved and volunteering. She survived breast cancer and other health issues and even during her decade-long struggle with dementia her natural fighting spirit was evident. She passed peacefully on August 3, 2014 at the age of 81.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held on Aug 23, 2014 in Lovell at the cemetery and her home respectively.
