Richard (Dick) McNaughton passed away peacefully on February 2nd, 2024 surrounded by his loving family. Born in White Plains, New York on July 16th,1938, Dick was one of 4 boys raised by his parents, Marjorie and Earle McNaughton. Dick’s connection to Maine came naturally. Marjorie grew up in Guilford and Earle was from the town of Sebec. Marjorie and Earle took the kids on family road trips to Sebec Lake during the summer to fish, spend time with family, and swim in the cold Maine water.
Earle inspired Dick to start playing tennis at age 9. He played tennis competitively at White Plains High School and St. Lawrence University, where he also sang for the St. Lawrence Saints. After graduating in 1960, Dick started his career as a commercial lending officer working in the Empire State building in NYC. After being offered a job at Casco Bank in 1972, Dick made his way to Cape Elizabeth, Maine with his first wife, Gail and two young boys, David and Peter.
Waking up to 2 1/2 feet of snow one day, Sam Ladd invited him to play at an indoor court for the first time in his life. Dick bonded with some great players in the Maine tennis community making lifelong friendships and perfecting his backhand slice. Dick rarely missed a tournament and was ranked #1 every year during his first four years playing tennis in Maine. He branched out to New England tournaments where he was undefeated his first year and remained in the top 5 every year until he reached 60. There were many victories and many surgeries during these years! Dick was named Sportsman of the Decade for the 1970s. His greatest legacy was fostering a love of the game for his two sons, David and Peter. One of Dick’s fondest memories was representing New England at the Family Equitable Tennis Challenge at the US Open, first with David then again with Peter two years later.
Dick found his life partner in 1985 when he met Virginia (Ginny). Dick and Ginny soon married and traded the Maine winters for sunny Florida. Dick continued to play competitively well into his 70s. Dick embraced Ginny’s family as his own and they shared 39 wonderful years together. In 2019, Dick and Ginny moved back to Maine full time to be near family. In the same year, Dick was inducted into the Maine Tennis Hall of Fame.
Dick was a true gentleman on and off the court. He treated everyone with respect. Dick had an infectious smile, a kind heart and loved to laugh. He will be dearly missed.
Dick is survived by his wife Ginny, brother Gary, son David (wife Kathy and children Connor and Julia), son Peter (wife Amy and children Lila and Sawyer), stepdaughter Cindy (children Tommy (partner Abby) and Ryan (partner Abby and son Lincoln)) and stepson Johnny (son John 4th).
