North Yarmouth - Richard "Dick" Maddox died peacefully at his home on June 5th after a long illness with his beloved family by his side. He was born on October 10, 1935 in Portland Maine, the son of Edna (Train) Worrey and Sheldon Joy. He often reminisced fondly about his childhood memories on the family farm with his Grammie and Grampa Train.
He was widely known as " Bumpy " by family & friends and the roadway to the family homes was named "Bumpy Lane" in his honor.
He married Judith Leighton on July 18, 1958 and they had two daughters, Laurie & Linda.
After graduating from Greely High School in 1954, he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan for two memorable years where he was a jet mechanic. Upon his return, he worked in different occupations including Merrill Transport, American Can, State of Maine & Cummings Brothers. He also owned a gas station doing mechanic work and worked with several area builders, until he started his own carpentry business in the early 70's. He quickly became known as the go to guy in the area for barn restorations. He worked with his son in law, Chuck Googins, who was like a son to him. As a testament to Dick's likeability, many of his clients became lifelong friends.
Dick was a man of many talents and interests. He had an innate knowledge of all things mechanical and construction, too many to list. He was a fixture in his barn puttering, helping friends and family with a myriad of repairs on virtually anything, working on his projects and vehicle restorations. Every Thursday was a momentous day when Uncle Henry's was published and he could look for his next project.
In 1977, he and Judy purchased the homestead in North Yarmouth which they restored. Years down the road, they built two additional "retirement" homes on the property and gave each of their daughters a parcel of land to build their homes to keep them nearby.
He loved his many toys, motorcycles, boats, sawmill, bulldozer, tractors and many more along the way. At the age of 40, he pursued his love of flying and obtained his pilot's license. He built a runway and hangar on the homestead to house his Aeronca Champ plane. He was well known in the area for his hobby and people would often stop to watch him fly in and out with his orange plane. He was a member of the Experimental Aeronautics Association.
When he and Judy reached the milestone of 50 years of marriage Dick restored a 1956 Ford to the exact likeness of the one they took on their honeymoon. They arrived in style at their anniversary celebration with Dick at the wheel and Judy proudly sitting by his side.
In 1995, they purchased a parcel of land on Etna Pond and built a camp where he and his family spent many happy times together.
