Yarmouth - Nancy Lee Fernald, 85, of Yarmouth died at Mercy Hospital in Portland with family by her side, on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 after a brief illness. She was born on October 4, 1928, the daughter of Evelyn (Webber) and Bruce Sumner Hascall. She graduated from Scarborough High School, Class of 1947.
Nancy was a home maker her entire life and was known as an outstanding cook who made meals large enough to "feed an army". She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, making baby blankets, mittens and scarves. She loved working in her gardens. In later years she especially enjoyed traveling with her husband Stan and trips with friends. Her favorite and most anticipated trip would be going to Boothbay.
Nancy will be remembered for her love, her strength, her genuine caring and readiness to help others. She was always just a phone call away. She also had a great love of animals, especially dogs. Most of all, she loved time spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children: Pamela J. Andrews of Windham; Stephen W. Smith of Yarmouth; Dianne L. McNeel and her husband Bart of Westbrook; Debra L. Lowe and her fiancé Bill Doughty of Westbrook; Darrell B. Smith of Auburn; two stepchildren: Stan Fernald, Jr. of Fort Myers; Sue McDougal and her husband Skip of Westbrook; grandchildren: Aaron and Melissa McNeel; Kaleb and Courtney Lowe; Nicole and Matt Smith; great grandchildren: Heather and Deserae O'Reilly and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her niece, Julie A. Newcomb of South Portland. Nancy was predeceased by her husband Stan, her brother Norman C. Hascall, her sister Lois A. Rich and her granddaughter Kelli O'Reilly.
A time of gathering and visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 5 - 6 PM, with a memorial service beginning at 6 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
