Madeline Savage Frend of Cumberland Foreside, Maine, passed away on August 25, 2010. She was born on November 10, 1913, in Dixfield, Maine, the daughter of Dr. Frederick S. and Eleanor Douglass Savage. She was graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and attended the Queen's Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine, and received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maine.
Until her marriage, she practiced nursing in the Newton - Wellesley, MA area. When she and her family moved to Maine, after twenty years as a home maker, she added a new career as a teacher at Phillips Elementary School.
Because she believed that one should make a positive contribution, she was active in community affairs and professional organizations. She served as president of the Franklin County Women's Republican Club and Mt. Abram Teachers' Association, vice-president of the Franklin County Hospital Auxiliary, and participated in the Phillips Historical Society, Phillips Garden Club, American Association of University Women, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Governor's Council on Education, Board of Directors of the Shadagee Seniors Housing in Phillips, Maine, and the Portland Women's Literary Union.
She firmly believed "laughter is the best medicine" and her enthusiasm for life enriched her family and many friends. Her intellectual curiosity prompted her extensive world travels and opened many fields of interest. Her most enjoyed hobby was playing bridge.
Madeline Savage Frend was pre-deceased by her husband James Richard Frend. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Peter and Bonnie Frend of Cumberland Foreside, Maine, and Stephen and Debbie Frend of Hallowell, Maine, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren
Visiting hours will be at the Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Sunday August 29, 2010. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Chapel, 307 Congress Street, Portland, Maine, at 10:00 AM.
She will be interred at a later date at Mile Square Cemetery in Phillips, Maine - a place with a view of the mountains of Maine that she loved.
