Freeport – Jennie B. Profenno, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend of Freeport, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2014 after a brief stay at Hawthorne House in Freeport. She was born on August 21, 1915.
Jennie was affectionately known by many throughout the community. She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons and their spouses: Patrick and Mary of W. Gardiner; Richard and Carolyn of Lisbon Falls; Robert and Roxanne of Freeport; as well as 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her sister Barbara Hustus of Pownal and several nieces, nephews and, of course, her many wonderful friends.
Jennie was the daughter of Frank and Harriet Gallant. She was the seventh of ten children and was born and raised in Yarmouth, Maine. She attended school up to the tenth grade at which time she met and married Patrick Profenno and moved to a small farm in Freeport at the age of 16. She resided there until she was 98 years old.
Jennie never worked outside of the home but she sure worked hard on the farm. She and her husband raised chickens and their children on the farm and then as the grandchildren began to arrive they surrounded them with love and happy times as well.
Jennie belonged to the First Baptist Church of Freeport for many years and she was a member of the Harraseeket Grange in Freeport for 58 years. She loved to cook and bake, but her favorite thing was having folks in to sample her cooking. For over 60 years, Jennie cooked a spaghetti supper every Monday night for anywhere from 4 to 24 people. She never wearied of doing this because she loved doing it. She also loved to garden and preserve her harvest. She was affectionately known as “Ma” or “Nana” to more than just her own. Jennie lived a rich and fulfilling life and she will be greatly missed by so many.
Visiting hours will be on Monday October 13 from 5 -7 PM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church in Freeport on Tuesday October 14 at 1 PM with burial in Burr Cemetery.
