August 30, 1938 – August 7, 2023
George M. Stiles, Jr. died peacefully at home in Yarmouth, Maine, on August 7 after a brief illness. George was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts, on August 30, 1938, to George M. and Ester Gilday Stiles. The family moved to Yarmouth in 1948 and his father must have said a thousand times, “Weren’t we lucky to have found Yarmouth!” No matter where life took him, George always considered Yarmouth home.
“Punch” (as those from Yarmouth knew him) graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1956, where he was voted class president and student council president. He went on to Gettysburg College where he made several life-long friends. He left after two years, eventually graduating from the University of Southern Maine. In 1970, George and his first wife Judy moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he attained his graduate degree in sociology from the University of North Carolina. He worked for many years in various healthcare fields, working to ensure access to care in both rural areas and through inner-cities community centers.
George was known as a wonderful cook and enjoyed sharing a good meal, a nice drink, and, most importantly, an interesting conversation with family and friends. He rooted for his beloved Red Sox, Patriots, and Tarheels through decades of ups and downs.
He is survived by his two sons, George M. Stiles and his wife Leslie of Chaplin, South Carolina, and Jonathan Stiles and his wife Martha of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Matt, Ellie Grace, Lillian Wells, Dixon, and Molly; two great-grandchildren, Natalia and Nadia; his sister Judy Oliver and her husband Gordon of Yarmouth, Maine; and his brother John (Jack) Stiles and his partner Holly Elliot of Freeport, Maine. Also surviving is his beloved partner Diane (Deet) Dodge of Jamestown, Rhode Island, who brought so much love and joy into his life.
A memorial service will be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Mary at 3:00 pm on Friday, August 18th.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or The Episcopal Church of St. Mary.
