Arlington, Mass – Frederick “Fred” Osgood, 72, formerly of Cumberland Center, ME passed away in Cambridge, MA on September 13, 2011 after a brief illness. He was born on April 28, 1939 in Portland, ME, a son of Edward W. and Dorothy E. (Jewer) Osgood. Fred graduated from Greely Institute in Cumberland, Class of 1957. In his younger years he was a volunteer firefighter in Cumberland and worked at Frost Marina in Raymond, ME. He retired from Varian Vacuum of Lexington, MA.
Fred served in the National Guard and had a great love of American history, especially regarding WWII. He enjoyed guns and target shooting. Fred will be remembered for his unique, quirky personality that defined him as a real character. For those who knew him best he will be remembered for his love of his grandson Daniel and how he “couldn’t get enough of Daniel”.
Fred is survived by his sons: Geoffrey Osgood and wife Talia of Wakefield, MA; Colin Osgood of Littleton, MA; Dana Osgood, John Osgood and Christopher Osgood, all of Smithfield, ME; his sisters: Joanne Best (Burton) of Greer, SC; Sandra Bowie of Yarmouth, ME; his brother, Edward C. Osgood and his wife Jane of Scarborough, ME; his grandson: Daniel Osgood of Littleton, MA; several nieces and nephews and his former spouse and good friend, Maryann Meeks of Littleton, MA. Fred was predeceased by his parents and his brother-in-law, Bernard Bowie of Yarmouth, ME.
There will be a gathering of family and friends on Friday September 23 from 10 – 11 AM at Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth ME with a Memorial Service at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Yarmouth.
