From the age of two he was raised in Portland by his great uncle, Llewelyn Winship and spent his summers in Wytopitlock with relatives. He graduated from Portland High School in 1946 and went to work at Carters Jewelry store. In 1948, he enlisted in the USAF and was attached to the 3rd Weather Wing. He served two tours of duty in England, one in Iwojima and one in Turkey. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for the National Weather Service and served in Maryland, North Dakota and finally Maine.
Donald was predeceased by three of his siblings.
He leaves behind his wife, Ann; son Andrew and his children Renee and Anthony of Brandywine, MD; daughter, Jennifer (Drouin) and her children Brandon and Caitlin of Windham, ME.
A special thanks to Dr. Zimmerman, Mike T. and all the staff at Maine Nephrology who kept him going and the VNA Hospice Team, especially Donna, for the great care given to Don in his final days.
There will be a period of visitation on Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 3-6 P.M. at Lindquist Funeral Home 1 Mayberry Lane Yarmouth, ME. Honoring Don’s wishes, a private ceremony will be held at Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta at a later date.
