Portland - David Thomas Mauldin, 64, of Yarmouth, passed away on April 30, 2010, at Maine Medical Center after a cardiac event.
David was born Dec. 30, 1945, in Portland, son of Thomas M. Mauldin and Theo (McMillan) Mauldin. He graduated from York High School and attended SMVTI in South Portland before joining the Navy in 1965. Based in Brunswick, ME, he was a member of Patrol Squadron 23 and worked as a flight comm. operator. While in the Navy he met and married his wife Karen Garside Mauldin of Augusta. Upon his discharge, they moved to York, ME where David worked as a carpenter, a Maine Turnpike employee and a lobsterman. He built his first home himself in York Harbor.
His great love for the outdoors led him to become a warden with the State of Maine Dept. of Marine Resources in 1976. His career began in Lubec then he covered the Milbridge and Freeport coastal areas. Promoted to Sergeant in 1985, his patrol area then became the southern Maine coast. During his years with DMR he became a certified scuba diver and earned his float rated pilots license.
Upon retirement from the State, David went to work for LL Bean in the hunting, fishing department. He worked in various positions as a gun buyer, archery instructor, techno range officer and gun repair person. He was a Master Maine Guide.
In 1991 David was blessed to receive a kidney from an anonymous donor. The transplant meant he could leave dialysis behind and he adopted “Carpe Diem” as his motto. He once again took up motorcycling, became a lifetime HOG member and area UBM representative. He rejoined all his favorite moose, deer and turkey hunts, traveled south for a winter and west across the country with his camper to visit his son. He loved to hunt, dig clams, rake blueberries and spend time with family and friends. He was a kind, generous person who was always available to lend a hand. A perfect day for him was a ride on his Harley Davidson, helping cook dinner with his wife, talking about her orchids and parakeets and enjoying a good old movie. The simple things were what made him happy.
He leaves behind his wife of 41 years, Karen G. Mauldin of Yarmouth; a son, Derek Thomas Mauldin of Ashland, OR; his father and step-mother Thomas M. and Beverly Mauldin of Weare, NH; a very special uncle, Eric McMillan of Martinsburg, WV; father-in-law William Garside of Augusta;; brother-in-law and wife, William II (Rusty) and Janette Garside of St. Petersburg, FL; nephew, wife and great niece, William III (Bo), Lori-Ann and Selena Garside of Augusta. He was predeceased by his mother, Theo M. Mauldin in 1996. He leaves friends far and wide.
