David Bischoff of Yarmouth passed away in his sleep on July 27, 2016. He was born on May 27, 1930, in Bellefonte, Pa. to Eugene C. and Jean C. Bischoff.
He attended Pennsylvania State University and graduated in 1952, and in 1953 received his M.S. from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. During the summer of 1953, he met Patricia Halfacre on a golf course and they married in August of 1954.Prior to receiving his Ph.D from Pennsylvania State University in 1958, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force.David and Patsy moved to Amherst, Mass. where he began his career in higher education at the University of Massachusetts starting as an Assistant Professor in 1957. He held many positions before becoming the Dean of the School of Physical Education from 1973 to 1992 and Associate Chancellor from 1984 to 1992. While living in Amherst, he was a President of the Community Chest, President of the National College of Physical Education, American Field Service Chapter President and a Trustee of the Hotchkiss School. He was also a consultant to many other schools of higher education.After his retirement, he and Patsy moved to Yarmouth. They spent summers cruising the coast of Maine and loved to travel. He was on the Board of Trustees at the Portland Museum of Art. Dave was a lifelong learner and audited classes at Bowdoin College. He was a passionate fly fisherman, bird hunter and adored all of his English Setters. Always involved in the community, he started volunteering at the Yarmouth Food Bank at the age of 85.
David was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Halfacre Bischoff, and his brother, John S. Bischoff. He is survived by his brother Stuart C. Bischoff and his wife Cynthia of Floyds Knob, Ind.; his children Cynthia Knowles and her husband Jonathan of Cumberland, Steven Bischoff and his wife Jane of New York City, and Ingrid Bischoff and Paul Schwabe of Greenwich, Conn.; his grandchildren, Elise Bower and her husband Jeff, Ben Knowles, Ingrid Knowles, Corey Bischoff, LTJG Kelly Bischoff, Wesley Bischoff, Steven Randall and Berit Randall; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
