Virginia A. Campbell died September 12, 2019 in Yakima, WA. She was born in the Enumclaw/Auburn, WA area on May 23, 1918. Her parents were Frank and Marion (Gray) Newman. She graduated from Enumclaw High School and then attended the College of Puget Sound before transferring to Central Washington College of Education where she obtained a teaching certificate.
In 1941 she married C. Elbert Norton and moved to Yakima. To this union were born Charles E. Norton and Judith A. Norton. Virginia began her teaching career after the early death of her husband in 1946. Broadway School was her first teaching assignment doing classroom teaching and branching to a Library and Media coordinator assignment.
In 1956 she married Carl W. Campbell and they had a son, Kerwin W. Campbell. Later she returned to school library work at Union Gap School for 15 years, retiring in 1982.
Virginia was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, serving in their library for over 50 years. She was a member of the Women’s Association and Edith Ferry Circle. Her skill in photography gave her the opportunity to be a historian and photographer of many groups such as Antique Seekers, Nature Artist Garden Club, Central Washington Garden Club, and Alpha Delta Kappa, a teachers’ sorority. Other organizations were Yakima Area Arboretum, Greenway, Yakima Valley Museum, and three snowmobile clubs. She enjoyed piano playing, gardening, photography, and crewel embroidery.
Traveling to Alaska with her husband Carl was a highlight, beside their many trips to Western Canada sites in their camper. Snowmobiling was another sport they enjoyed with friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl (April 2019). Virginia leaves behind son Charles Norton and wife Linda of Cathlamat, daughter Judith Hoye and husband Keith of Arizona, and son Kerwin Campbell and wife Laurel of Auburn, and numerous nieces and nephews
