She was born March 17, 1924 in Pleasant Hill, Illinois to Joseph Atlee Venable and Ora Camille Nicholas.
Sara attended twelve years of school in Louisiana, Missouri and graduated from Saint Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Saint Louis, Missouri.
After receiving a Masters Degree in Public Health Nursing Service Administration from Columbia University in 1955 she entered the United States Public Health Service.
She was a Nurse Director in the United States Public Health Service in the Naval Division as a Captain and received a medal of commendation before her retirement in 1978.
Mah jongg, tai chi, bridge, hiking, bonsai and bird watching were some of the activities which she enjoyed.
Kay was president of the Pacific Bonsai Northwest Bonsai Clubs Association from 2002-2004.
She co-authored a book, Birding in Southcentral Washington, which was published in 1973.
Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Ellen Peterson; grandsons, Justin Scott Peterson, Joseph Stephen Peterson; niece, Anne Stanfield Seymour; nephews, Allen Stanfield and Randy Venable.
Kay’s remains will be placed in the family plot at Pleasant Hill, Illinois. Keith & Keith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
