May 13, 1930 - April 21, 2015
Phyllis was the fourth of five daughters born to Ralph and Rosa Harter on May 13, 1930 in LaVoy, Alberta, Canada. Not wanting to marry a farmer (nor the pre-dawn wake-up calls), she emigrated to Washington State in 1957 and became a U.S. Citizen in 1962. While becoming a citizen, she met and fell in love with her immigration examiner, Dan, who she
married later that year. Their union produced two lovely and loving daughters, Geri (1963) and Leila (1964), who pursued careers in nursing and journalism, respectively.
Phyllis was an accomplished full-charge bookkeeper; whose talents were clearly apparent as the IRS failed to come knocking even once during the couple’s 52 years of joint returns. Phyllis was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and was also active in the volunteer community; working with Head Start, adults with Cerebral Palsy, and Hospice of Spokane. She
volunteered many years for the Everett Pregnancy Resource Center. For their 50th Anniversary, Dan and Phyllis renewed their wedding vows during the 2012 Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon. More importantly, their walk raised money for Crohn’s and Colitis research, a disease that has touched many family members.
Phyllis has many friends in Lynnwood, WA where she and her husband lived for more than 20 years. Phyllis and Dan left Lynnwood for Yakima in August 2014 where, prior to her passing, they resided at Living Care Retirement Community. Phyllis quickly made new friends through Valley View Bible Study and Bible Study Fellowship.
Phyllis joined her Lord on April 21, 2015. She is loved and survived by her husband, Daniel Kahn; her daughters Geri Catton (Yakima, WA),
Leila Kahn (Washington, D.C.); her son-in-law, Dr. Christopher Catton; and her five grandchildren: Christine, Lindsey, Daniel, Joey, and Michael.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, or Memorial Foundation for Memorial Hospice c/o Keith & Keith, 902 W. Yakima Ave., Yakima, WA 98902.
A funeral service will be held a Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 409 Filbert Rd. Lynnwood, WA on Saturday, April 25, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a short crypt-side service and entombment at 12:00 p.m. A reception will follow.
A local memorial service and social hour will held at Meyer Auditorium, Living Care Retirement Community in Yakima, WA at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, 2015.
