Son of Phillips A. and Florence (Bowen) Noyes. Phil was born in Cambridge Mass, Dec, 5 1925. He was raised on the ocean in Marion Mass. where he went to grade school and high school at Tabor Academy. After two years at Dartmouth College he joined the Army Air Corp. He wanted to fly and he did. The war ended before he saw any action. After his discharge he met and married his sweetheart Jessie Brightman, from New Bedford Mass. They packed their belongings and hitched a ride with a friend to the northwest to start a family. We always asked him if they came in a covered wagon… he always said, "NO, it was a station wagon”. They began in Tacoma where the three kids were born. The ocean was still nearby, they loved the ocean. He got a job with Washington Hardware. He later transferred to Yakima to take the Eastern Washington region and moved the family. He was later recruited by Yakima Hardware and worked many years for them. Even after retirement he came back for years to help take inventory which scored him a giant ham at Christmas every year until his passing.
He was always very active in sports, As a kid he caddied at a nearby golf course and enjoyed sailing on Buzzards Bay. Dad played softball, was on a bowling team and loved to take the dog out bird hunting with all his friends up and down the valley. He didn’t retire his tennis racket until he turned 80. His main hobby was golf and he was a member at Suntides Golf Course. Active in the men’s club he played every weekend. After retirement he played daily. Waking up the birds, his group could play 18 holes and still be home for a nap at 9:00 a.m. They didn’t like to wait. He played the game into his 90’s and could still hit a solid iron and had a great short game. He had 1 hole-in-one. He never missed a putt within
8 feet because he would just pick it up and
say, "Close enough."
As a family we did much traveling, it is in our blood. Trips back East to see the Grandparents and uncles and aunts and cousins were wonderful trips. Whether we drove or flew, it inspired us to travel and explore. The ocean was number one, Mom and Dad did many cruises, and we had family reunions at Seaside Or. for 70 plus years. We all had our feet in the salt water and sand all over us before we could walk.
He was preceded in death by Mom in 2006, his brothers Edward, Donald, and sister Elizabeth. Dad is survived by his three children, Phil III, Richard (Linda) Noyes, Debby (Clay) Gatchel. Grandchildren, Craig Noyes, Brook Gatchel, Ukiah Gatchel, Stacey Noyes, Jennifer Swatzell, great-grandchildren, Michael Noyes, Huck Olney, Phoebe Swatzell, Kaitlyn Gatchel, Jason (Hanna) Gatchel. And numerous nieces and nephews scattered all over the country from Wisconsin to all points east.
We thank Megan Cupp for the companionship she shared with Dad. She kept him active and moving with trips and ball games, and lots walks, and that’s what kept him happy and healthy well into his 90’s. Thanks to the Harman Center for just being a great place to hang out and enjoy a few meals and games and chat. He loved it there, and it’s nice to know that he will be well missed.
