Olivia was born January 30, 1921, in Menominee, NE, to Anton and Katherine (Kleinschmidt) Goeden. She was the 2nd youngest of 6 children. When Mom was about 7, the family moved to Timberlake, SD.
She left home at an early age, finding work as a maid in Yankton, SD. There she met a young barber named John “Jack” Fischer. They were married in February, 1941, in Trail City, SD. They lived in Mobridge, SD, where their first 3 children were born (Jim, Jackie and Joyce). In 1947 the young family journeyed west to WA state, settling in Yakima, where they were blessed with 4 more children (Bernard, Rose,Kathy and Debi).
Olivia was a stay at home Mom which was a full time job with 6 kids! When the children were older she went to work for Del Monte Cannery and retired from there after 20 years. After retirement Mom and Dad moved to Broadmoor Mobile Home Park where they enjoyed many wonderful, happy years, made many more friends, and loved working her small garden.
Mom was such an amazing cook! She was well known for her pies, cakes, candies and potato salad. She so loved to gamble (playing her penny machines)! Many memorable and fun trips were made to Nevada throughout the years. She also loved to play pinochle, bridge, canasta (any card game), and bowling, and was quite the dancer. Olivia had a deep faith and was a Eucharistic Minister for many years at Holy Redeemer Church. Mom and Dad were married 66 years at the time of Dad’s passing in 2007.
Olivia was preceded in death by her parents, 5 siblings, sons Jackie and Bernard, son-in-law Jerry Jones, and the love of her life, John “Jack” Fischer. She is survived by her children Jim (Connie) Fischer, Joyce (Gary) Bogatich, Rose Jones, Kathy (Andy) Benoit and Debi (Bill) Hinze. Also survived by 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, January 18th, at 10:00 a.m. at St Paul’s Chapel, Yakima, WA.
We would like to acknowledge the absolutely amazing care, compassion and love that both Mom and Dad received from the entire staff at Summitview Health Care. There are, truly, no words that can convey our sincere gratitude and appreciation.
