The family relocated to Yakima where her brother James was born. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1954 where she was editor of the school paper. After graduation she worked for Pacific Northwest Bell as an operator, and was later promoted to the business office. During these years she met James D. Smith. They were married August 10, 1957 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
After living a short time in Yakima, they moved to Selah where they raised four boys. She was very proud of their athletic and academic accomplishments. She was an avid supporter of Selah sports. She and Jim were even named Fans of the Year in 1987.
One of Mary Ann’s favorite activities was square dancing. She and Jim square danced for over 20 years and were members of the Yakima Gateswinger’s Square Dance Club. Mary Ann enjoyed traveling all over, but especially to the Oregon Coast on the 4th of July to spend time with friends and family.
Mary Ann truly loved spending time with her five grandchildren. She traveled many miles to watch them participate in sports and activities, and loved joining them on family vacations.
She is survived by her husband James; sons Dr. David Smith (Dr. Janis Hayward) of Ann Arbor, MI, Dan (Lisa) Smith of Selah, Andy (Terri) Smith of Selah, and Scott (Shelley) Smith of Selah; brother Jim (Jolene) Tobin of Yakima; and grandchildren Rachael (Joey) Domino, Tyler Smith, Erin Smith, Katie Smith and Michael Smith. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and daughter-in-law Lyn Bonnin Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10am, Monday, November 9, 2015 at Keith & Keith Funeral Home followed by burial at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Visitation will be on the day of the funeral.
