James Arthur Albers

Jim was born in Calgary, Canada to Arthur and Katherine Albers on December 1, 1924. He grew up in Centralia, Washington. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard at the age of 17, serving in World War II. In 1950 Jim married Ethel Cordelia Martinson. Together they raised 4 children.

Jim attended Western Washington College where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in education. Later he earned his Master’s degree from Central Washington College.

His passion for woodworking began early as a Cabinet Maker. He combined this with his teaching profession to work 33 years as an Industrial Arts Teacher, primarily in the Yakima Public School District. He further supported the schools in the design and construction of sets and props for school productions. In addition he used his woodworking skills as a volunteer for 1st Presbyterian Church Camp Ghormley and YMCA Camp Dudley. Following his retirement in 1984 Jim operated a private handyman business.

Jim and Ethel spent many happy hours fishing and huckleberry picking. They were members of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club where they served as Presidents for many years. They also enjoyed playing pinochle with friends and in several card groups.

Jim was involved in the YMCA Y’s Men’s club and YARC, an association to assist people with developmental disabilities. He was a founding member of Yakima Specialties Inc. a nonprofit workshop for the education and training of developmentally challenged citizens. He served as a board member for 45 years after which the “James Albers” woodshop was named in his honor. He was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, serving on the Session, the Camp Ghormley Building Committee, and as an usher.

Jim is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ethel, son Martin (Dia) Albers, daughters Lorna (Britt) Smith, and Kathy (Mark) Beaulaurier, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and his sister Caroline Smith and family. He is preceded in death by his son Fred and his friend and brother in law Harold (Smitty) Smith.

As a community oriented individual who shared his skills and humor with friends, family, students, neighbors, and coworkers, Jim positively touched everyone around him. He was a great husband, parent, teacher, and friend. He will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service for Jim will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2015 at Grace of Christ Church (formerly First Presbyterian Church).
