Howard “Hodgie” Vaughn Bayne, 81, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2017 peacefully at home surrounded by his family in Selah, WA. He was born on September 15, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, WA, the only child to Forrest August and Wilma Beatrice (Sheets) Bayne.
He was educated in Toppenish and would go on to assist his father at the family owned filling station. He married Elizabeth A. Laws on November 21, 1956 in Wapato, WA. Hodgie worked for various companies before finding his niche in the vending industry where he worked as a supervisor for Automat and Coca Cola. He went on to own his own vending company, Hopes Coffee, before retiring.
Hodgie held a second job to help support his large family. We don’t think he looked at it as work though. He played drums with a number of bands from Seattle to Spokane on the weekends to help provide for his family. His family will remember him as a talented musician, jokester, and golfer, and for his never a dull moment personality.
He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years Elizabeth “Liz” Bayne; children Terry (Gloria) Bayne of Yakima, Steve (Linda) Bayne of Selah, Sandy (Lonnie) Upson of Selah, Kim (Don) Wangler of Selah, Leah (Willie) Quinnell of Selah and Kelly (Bob) Bettger of Ridgefield, WA; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Monday, January 16, 2017 at Rainier Memorial Center with burial to follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Hodgie’s honor can be sent to Children’s Orthopedic Hospital, Seattle, WA.
