Gene and his father, step-mom and stepsiblings moved to Yakima when he was 16 years old and attended Yakima High School. He worked in various jobs in the agriculture field until enlisting in the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines during World War II.
Gene met Marlys Gredvig and they married in May of 1944 and daughter Marsha was born in June 1945 and son Dennis in November 1947. Gene drove truck for Associated Grocers before he began his lifelong career with Pacific Northwest Bell ---- Ma Bell ---- as he called it, retiring in 1982. He began working in Yakima as a lineman and then moved to and worked in Walla Walla continuing with the Telephone Company as well as raising and showing Appaloosa horses, attending shows and competition throughout the U.S. During his retirement, he was a beloved bus driver for the Milton Freewater School District and enjoyed many trips with the band and sport teams as well as his daily route.
After retiring, Gene made his home in Arizona during the snowbird months of October through April. From May to September, he enjoyed the late spring, summer and early fall months in Yakima. He enjoyed golfing, gambling, and helping Dennis during harvest driving tractor and leveling bins. He was an avid Mariner and Diamondback fan and loved watching baseball on TV. He, along with Marsha, worked at the Mariner’s spring training camp in Arizona for 10 years.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Erven and Pearl, stepmother Beulah, brothers Kenneth, Covey, Bill, Doyle, Glenn and sisters Earline, Patricia and Donna, first wife Marlys Wiltsey and daughter Marsha Anderson.
Gene is survived by his son Dennis (Dianna), son-in-law Andy Anderson, grandchildren: Andy (Kim) Hiebert, Kevin (Bobbie) Hiebert, Maegen (Henri) Otterstein, Todd (Chris) Sandifer and Randy (Kerri) Sandifer, 10 great-grandchildren: Randi Marie (Chris), Terah (Brandon), Ryan, Kyle, Sydney, Desimus, Arya, Skylar, Mackenzie and Isabella and 5 great-great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Alexa, Warren, Beau & Dean.
