Momma passed away quietly on June 28 at 3:40 pm at Good Samaritan. She was born on July 1, 1924, in Drynob the township of Franklin, MO. She was born Virginia Beryl Cansler to the parents of Lester and Eva Cansler. She loved school but was only able to attend through the eighth grade. It became necessary for Mom to help take care of her younger sisters and help Grandma on the farm.
Mom loved to read and always regretted never being able to finish school. On June, 24, 1939, Mom married Dad Charles L Roberts who was 21, Mom was but 14. Grandma signed an affidavit swearing she was 15. I do not think Mom ever forgave Grandma. Mom and dad raised three children, Ruth Elaine (husband Roy Kanzig, deceased), Elanda (Kay) Charlene (husband Gary Hamilton, deceased) and Charles Dale, wife Debbie of Spokane.
Mom is survived by Ruth and Elanda and two younger sisters June Young and MaryAnn Krentz all of Yakima, son Charles and wife Debbie of Spokane. She left behind three grandsons and wives and eight great-grandchildren all of Spokane, and one grandson, wife and great-grandchild of Colorado Springs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was preceded in death by one brother, Dale, her parents Lester and Eva, and her husband (Dad) of 63 years. Mom weathered many storms in life during her 94 years. Elanda had polio at 16 months and needed extra care but Mom always was able to give Ruth and Chuck the same love and attention. Mom had breast cancer in 2001 and seemed as though her health went down gradually from there on. She was barely 5 feet tall and very small in stature. Mom started falling more and breaking her fragile tiny bones which is what led to her death, a severe fall and pneumonia.
Besides her reading Mom made beautiful quilts with grandma and loved shopping for clothes, shoes and furniture. Momma’s sweet, gentle nature touched the hearts of many people. She could however voice her dislikes and opinion in a clear resounding voice. She got a little cranky as she aged. Because of her falling her home had to be sold and she spent 5+ years at the Ponderosa Retirement.
I would like to thank Heartlinks for the compassion they extended to me and Mom. Greg, Mary and Joan (who will be officiating at the funeral) all took extra time to explain things so there were no surprises. Also the head nurse Sharon and other staff members at Good Samaritan were so kind to serve coffee and a courtesy lunch. They made sure we had what we needed while also giving us privacy. There is just one more thank you. There was one individual who helped me with mom and that was Matt Haberman. Mom would laugh and tell him she had pneumonia – it was a standing joke between them.
I already miss her smile, laughter and love. We spent many wonderful days together and I will cherish them for the rest of my life.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 3, 2019 from 2-5 p.m. There will be graveside services on July 5 at 2 p.m. at West Hills.
