friends in Goodyear, Arizona. Dyane embraced life with a heart full of love and kindness. She was a
loving wife, mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend to many. Dyane was a devoted wife to John
Patrick Hurson for 39 years. Together they raised their two sons John Michael Hurson and Kenneth Ian
Hurson, who were the center of her world. Dyane's granddaughter, Ryan Nevin Hurson, brought even
more joy to her life.
Dyane was born Betty Dyane Abril, December 18, 1950 in Tucson, Arizona to parents Manuel
"Bert" and Beatriz Abril, the second of five children. She spent her childhood in Ontario, California,
graduating from Chaffey High School in 1969 and attending California State Polytechnic University.
While in California she met the love of her life, John Patrick Hurson. He swept her off her feet and they
married in September 1974. John and Dyane moved to Washington to join his father in the fruit
transportation business in 1978. Dyane began her career as an office manager at the California DMV,
and Dept. of Corrections. She was a school secretary in the Yakima Schools and was currently the office
manager at Yakima Education Association, a position she held for 27 years. As a school secretary, Dyane
loved children and always had the right words to encourage and comfort them. She was aware that the
needs of the staff were critical to the success of the classroom and supported them however she could.
In her position as Yakima Education Association office manager, she had a strong sense of right and
wrong, and fought for fair compensation and working conditions for the teachers. A past president
stated "YEA presidents come and go. Dyane was the glue, the consistency, the credibility, and heartbeat
of our organization." In this position, she was able to impact every teacher and student in the district,
and she was respected by all who knew her.
Dyane had a very strong faith and she was an amazing example of how to love. Dyane never
met a stranger and made lasting friends everywhere she went. Once embraced as a friend, you were her "
friend for life. She always had wonderful things to say about everyone who walked into her radius. "If
Dyane was our ambassador, there would be no fighting in this world". Because she lived in the moment,
she was always late, and her friends and family learned to tell her to come a half hour early, so she
would be on time.
Passionate about all sports, she especially loved baseball. Her first teacher of the game was her
father. She would share stories of them going to LA Dodgers games together. As a purist, the
designated hitter was not part of the game. 'She loved the Mariners and attended their games as often
as possible. Many of us were spectators and observers until we sat next to her and she taught us the
game. Recently at a Seahawks game, she realized that we were getting older as the coaches were better
looking than the players.
Dyane's life revolved around her family and she cherished both immediate and extended family
and friends. She was extremely close to her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, in-laws
and friends and she never let distance separate her from those she loved. She had so much family and
so many friends that she loved and loved her in return. The hole left by her absence is a great big huge
cavern that will be felt for the rest of our lives. As her son Ken put it, "we have lost a shining star".
Dyane was preceded in death by her father, Bert Abril, brother-in-law Bill Perry, .and sister-in-
law Karen Abril.
Dyane is survived by her husband John of Yakima, WA, children John Michael (Melissa), and
Kenny (Brooke), both of Portland Oregon, her mother Beatriz, brothers Randy and Robert,
sisters Christina "KiKi" (David) and Beatriz "YaYa" , all of California, granddaughter Ryan, of
Portland, Oregon, and numerous nieces and nephews.
