Surrounded by his family, Shawn David Turnbull, 56, of Columbus, Ohio passed away peacefully at home and went to be with our Lord & Savior on Friday, August 25, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife Teresa Turnbull, children Michael (Meagan) and Mia (Ignacio) Turnbull, and many special aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. The beloved son of Suzanne (Dennis) DeGroot and the late Robert Turnbull (2023), Shawn was born on September 17, 1966 in Columbus, Ohio. He was a proud graduate of Grove City High School, class of 1984, and The Ohio State University, class of 1990.
Shawn had many special friendships and touched the lives of many throughout his community. He knew no stranger and made a new friend everywhere he went. Shawn loved watching sports – especially Raiders football, vacationing with his family in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and being with his three dogs, Tacoma, Bailey, and Hank. His greatest joy was spending time with and supporting the passions of his wife and children. Shawn was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Westerville, Ohio. He took great pride in his many accomplishments, which include being a dedicated 25 year employee of JP Morgan Chase, growing the Dublin Youth Athletics Lacrosse Program, and coaching his children in various sports in their younger years.
Shawn was an inspiration to many throughout his eight and a half year fight against cancer. Always maintaining a positive attitude and courageous spirit, he was a true warrior. Shawn fought each day for his family and did not let cancer restrict him from doing what he loved. Throughout his fight, he continued to visit his children, make weekly visits to the gym, and connect with his friends over lunch. Although cancer took a great toll on his body, his inner strength truly went unmatched.
The Turnbull family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at The James Cancer Institute, especially Dr. Amir Mortazavi, as well as Mike, Nicole, Rolanna, and Steve with Bella Care Hospice for their care and compassion. The gracious support and encouragement offered by many friends and family over the years has been a true testament to Shawn’s special friendships created throughout his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute or Bella Care Hospice.
A visitation for Shawn will be held Tuesday, August 29, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Schoedinger Worthington, 6699 N High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085. A funeral mass will occur Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 100 East Shrock Road, Westerville, Ohio 43081.
