Born in Orrville, Ohio on September 1, 1929 to Enos and Evelyn Wagner, who preceeded him in death along with his brother, William and sister-in-law Wanda. He graduated from Ohio Northern University’s School of Pharmacy. He then joined the United States Army to serve in the Korean Conflict.
When he returned to the States, he visited his friend from church camp, Jim Hiland, and met the love of his life, Jim’s sister, who became his wife of 67 years, Nancy Wagner. They proceeded on to live their lives in Columbus, Ohio, raising three children; Lynda (Darren) Lucas; Tom (Suzanne), and Jim Wagner. They are blessed with 5 granddaughters- Amanda (Paul) Kronk, Paige Wagner (Adam Love), Haley Wagner, Abbey Lucas, Kelsey Lucas (CJ Stahl) and two great-grandchildren, Keaton Love and Remington Kronk.
Besides his family his second love was auto racing, particularly Indy Car Racing. He worked on the wrecker crew at the Indy 500 from the mid-70s through 2011, and numerous other races across the country. In his later years he enjoyed playing billiards and poker.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 10:30 am-12pm at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON, 6699 North High St, Worthington, Ohio, 43085. Richard’s service will begin immediately following at 12pm. Services will conclude with interment at Mifflin Township Cemetery.
He will be sorely missed for his quick wit and ready smile. The family would like to thank Capital City Hospice for their wonderful care and support. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to American Heart Association, Special Olympics, Peletonia (Haley Wagner) and The Columbus Walk to End Alzheimer’s (Slip’s Slackers team).
