A proud veteran, Richard served in the Army during the Korean War. His commitment to service was reflected in his professional life as well. Richard graduated from Miami University with a BS in Education and a Masters in Education from Xavier University. The first 10 years of his professional career, Richard managed Kroger Stores. He then went on to become a 6th grade school teacher shaping young minds for the next 30 years in the Columbus Public School District.
Beyond his professional and military achievements, Richard was an avid athlete. His love for sports saw him complete numerous marathons and triathlons. In addition, Richard was a referee, umpire, and coach. He served as the first boys soccer coach for Brookhaven High School. He also loved basketball and led the 1982 Northland High School Girls’ Basketball Team to become State Champions as their Assistant Coach. Richard was also a pilot, enthusiastically soaring the skies whenever he got the chance. He shared his love for flying by becoming a Certified Flight Instructor and teaching others to fly.
As a hardworking family man, Richard is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Emalou Truske, his children Carol Atha (Bob), Caren Truske, and Rick Truske (Mike); his grandchildren Hunter Atha, Tanner Atha, Lauren Atha Skinner, and great grandson, Bentley Skinner. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Esther (Molly) Truske; his sister, Nancy Strosnider; his brother, James Truske, and his nephew Scott Truske.
Richard's life was a testament to his resilient spirit and dedication to his family and country. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In memory of Richard Truske, contributions may be made to the Kobacker House of Columbus.
