Barbara J. Haselwood, of Columbus, OH, died, age 93, on April 8 following an extended illness. She was born September 1, 1931, in Mt. Carmel PA and was preceded in death by her husband John L Haselwood and parents Thomas B. Banks and Stella D. Banks. She is survived by daughter, Beth Ann Haselwood, Columbus, OH; son, Wm. She was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson HS, Charleston, W. Va. She attended Victoria Junior College, where she was a cheerleader and homecoming queen. She continued her education and graduated from the University of TX with an Elementary Education Degree.
She was teaching 4th grade in Victoria, TX, when she met her husband of 50 years at a mutual friend’s dinner party. Although she thought he was a bit cocky when they first met, she eventually fell for the charming and handsome Air Force officer. He was so taken by her, that he sold his airplane and bought her an engagement ring. They married on June 12, 1955, and relocated to Columbus, OH where they started their new family. After the kids were grown, they moved between Atlanta, GA and Columbus, OH several times with Jack’s job.
Barbara was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at her children’s elementary and high school activities. She was active with the Columbus Symphony, Worthington Historical Society, St. Vincent De Paul Society, and was a member of several social organizations, including being a founding member and officer of Women Today.
Her passion however was entertaining. Whether a tea, book club gathering, dinner party, or lavish birthday and theme parties, she always made the events special. Christmas time was her most favorite often spending many weeks decorating with unique and historical decorations.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of StoryPoint North-Powell and to Jessica and Erica of Gentiva Hospice Gahanna for their genuine care of mom and to some dear friends: Mary G., Phil E., Jane D., Brian & John.
She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Westerville, OH where a private funeral mass will be held followed by a private burial service at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Gentiva Hospice, Gahanna, OH and Life Care Alliance.
