My Brother is the door closing and opening.
My Dad is the insulation that keeps me warm and is always happy in his walls.
My Mom is the phone giving me a call good news and sometimes bad news.
My cat Percy is the couch laying there that is magical bringing me to Neverland where the days never end.
June is the blanket for the couch cuddling down to my feet.
For me, I am the window. Without me there is no light taking the role of the moon.
Altogether we are a wonderful room.
By Augustin D. Heflin, Third Grade
In loving memory of Augustin Daniel Heflin, who passed away April 7, 2024 at just 12 years of age. Born on June 1, 2011 Augustin, affectionately known as Auggie had the ability to imprint his positivity and compassion on all who had the privilege of knowing him. It didn’t matter if you knew Auggie well or barely at all, he filled your cup. Whether it was his infectious sense of humor or his funny voices, his eye for fashion- he supported one of the best sneaker rotations in Ohio and mastered the cool fit look- his fearlessness or his warmth, he truly had the gift of connecting with people from all walks of life - without judgment, but with love. His high emotional intellect, allowed him to empathize with others and offer comfort and support to those in need, he was always looking out for the “under dog”.
Auggie's vibrant spirit is evident in his passion for camaraderie, academics, team sports: soccer was a new love this year, track was a new adventure, and of course AAU and Dominion Middle School basketball. Auggie came with a sophisticated palate and could kill a breakfast sandwich or two, he could eat his weight in sushi, an entire large “meats-Za” pizza, a whole cheese cake or container of Graeters S’mores ice cream.
Beyond food, he loved the outdoors, the sun, the water: oceans, bays, rivers, ponds, streams, puddles and the good old garden hose. Be it kayaking, hiking, mountain climbing, polar bear dips, or running 8 miles lost in a forest while wearing crocs, Auggie was fearless and determined. He was at ease in at a fine restaurant or dirty nature, in competition, brotherhood, training with a friend or simply snuggling with his “Covid kitties” June and Percy, or his canine companion Tally.
He most loved time with his family. He was a devoted son to Eugene and Cori (Henthorn) Heflin, and loyal older brother to Paxton D. Heflin. Auggie cherished his family. The Friday pizza nights, movie nights, cooking, dancing and singing in the kitchen, the Nerf fights, fishing, and family walks. Mornings often began with a good hug promptly followed by an Auggie dissertation on some controversial subject for which he had an educated opinion. Above all he shared a special bond with his “little bro,” Paxton that went beyond that of a sibling. Auggie was so proud of Paxton and was a fierce protector and mischief-maker. Together they navigated life’s adventures with unwavering support and love for each other. Auggie had a special intense love of his Dad, AKA his errand runner, chauffeur, field trip friend, wingman, fellow historian, and his reflection. Mom and Auggie shared a quick wit, and passion for mind-benders, lazy sunny days in the hammock, musical lyrics, and fashion. Auggie at 12 years of age still asked for a hug a kiss and loved to be tucked in each night- be it mom or dad or a friend’s parent, he still hugged his friends. Auggie still held hands with his parents. Auggie lived his love for us.
Nowhere is his love and generosity more evident than in his final act. Auggie’s final field trip in life was an Honor Walk to the operating room April 7, 2024 when he selflessly donated his organs and tissue to extend and save the lives of others. He donation will advance medical science through research to help others for infinity (and beyond - he loved Buzz and Woody). Please know today, Auggie’s heart beats on… to the rhythm of another’s life.
Though his absence grows louder with each passing day, his legacy of love, laughter, kindness, intellect, and great looks (from his daddy), endures. Auggie’s reflection can be seen in those he touched during his brief time with us, he was everyone’s best friend.
Auggie leaves no one behind, rather he calls us to join his legacy:
May each and every one of us be “the window of light” as Auggie takes to the role of the moon. Together, we are all a wonderful room.
