After graduating from Toledo Central Catholic High School in 1953 he served in the US Navy from 1954-1958. He then began his career with Toledo Scale and took great pride in that being the only company which he worked for. That employment allowed him to start his family in Toledo and moved them through Windsor, Canada; Providence, RI; Baltimore, MD; Philadelphia/Berlin, NJ; and finally landing in Columbus, OH. He was able to start his own business, A.C. Lister & Co, representing Toledo Scale and many other brands, which provided him great fulfillment and success. Outside of his passion for the scale business and impeccable customer service, he found great joy in his time spent coaching and playing various sports, volunteering with Catholic youth organizations, and participation with the Knights of Columbus. Al’s favorite pastimes included Ohio State sports, hunting, playing cards, and as many rounds of golf as one could humanly fit in.
Al never met a stranger and loved to welcome one and all into his home. He would gladly entertain the room with stories of coaching or playing sports, travels taken through the Navy, or many childhood adventures with his mischievous cousins. To the friends of his children, who knew of the open door policy, he would always send them out the door with a shout of “If you need a ride, call me”, ensuring everyone knew they were always taken care of and protected.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, and his younger brother Dale Lister. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife of almost 60 years, Patricia, and their five children; Terri (Rick) Yates, Keith (Lori) Lister, Beth (David) McCabe, Steve (Margit) Lister, and Diane (Geoff) Dougherty. Also, his eleven grandchildren, Mackenzie and Zach Yates; Kyle (Amber) Lister, Sydney (Nate) Hess; Madeleine, Sean, and Ian McCabe; Maddox and Brody Lister; Ryan and Jack Dougherty; great granddaughter Hadley Rose Hess, his sister Barb (Whitey) Knannlein, and sister- in-law Pam.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Powell, OH on Tuesday, April 19th at 10:30am. Arrangements have been entrusted to Schoedinger Worthington Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the James Cancer Center at Ohio State, National Church Residences Hospice, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
