Worcester - Hymen Shapiro, known to his friends as Hy, passed away on August 6, 2012. He was just short of his 96th birthday.
He was the devoted and beloved husband of Buncy “Bun” Shapiro. They had, what can only be described, as the perfect marriage for sixty one years. They told each other every day that “you are my love, my life and my gansa velt” (whole world).
In addition, Hy was extremely proud and loving toward his daughter, Barbara Medoff. He told her every day how lucky he was to have her and that she was just like her mother. Coming from Hy, there can be no greater compliment. Barbara is the wife of Ed McGeary and they reside in Fairfield, Ct. Hy also leaves a son and his wife, Richard and Faith Shapiro and grandchildren.
Hy and Bun met just before World War II. During the war, Bun served the country by working in the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Hy served in the Army in the Pacific with the Americal Division.
Hy married Bun on May 20th, 1945. After the war, Hy and Bun purchased a grocery store fondly known in the neighborhood as the Florence Street Market in Worcester and then later, Manny’s Market in Clinton. They worked together every day for over thirty one years. They are still fondly remembered by many in the area for their kindness and generosity.
Hy and Bun enjoyed fishing and traveling. They were members of a weekly Poker and social club with the same group of friends for over fifty years. In recent years he resided in Stratford, CT, at an assisted living facility so he could be near Barb and Ed. Hy was equally loved by the staff and the residents. It was not unusual for him to entertain them on piano. He enjoyed helping the less active residents any way he could. They all enjoyed his smile, charm and wit. He also enjoyed eating out during the week and Sunday dinners at Ed and Barb’s home as well as countless hours of enjoyment and fun playing cribbage together with Barb.
Hy was a special man. He lived an honorable life. He was a credit to his community, his Country and his family. He is now where he wants to be, with his beloved Bun. As my Dad wrote this to my Mom, now we write this to both of them: “May the warm sun always shine on you at day and the moon softly glow on you at night.” Love forever, Barb and Ed.
Funeral services will be held at the Perlman Funeral Home, 1026 Main St Worcester, on Thursday, August 9th at 2:30 PM. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery. Friends may join the family after the burial at the Webster House, 1 Webster St. in Worcester.
