Col. Poynter was born in Dover, AR to the late William L. and Mildred T. Poynter. During high school, he joined the Army National Guard. He graduated from Arkansas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree of Business Administration. He was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Core. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Armor branch. He later transferred to the Corps of Engineers. During his 32 years of honorable service, he served two tours in Germany and two in Vietnam. He retired as a Colonel.
After his retirement, he worked for several years at the Garber family-owned nursery in Rex, GA tending to all the plants and trees of their nursery business. He loved this job and especially the Garber family. He then moved to Peel, AR, where he was active with the Peel Volunteer Fire Department, eventually becoming a trainer. He enjoyed being in the outdoors. He was a loving father, brother, uncle and friend and he possessed unwavering integrity. Col. Poynter showed kindness to everyone he met and was a very giving person.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dana Poynter and Mark Poynter; sister, Ann Wilderman; niece and nephew, Carol Montgomery and Matt Wilderman; and great-nephew and great-nieces, Travis Montgomery, and Hannah and Ashlee Montgomery.
A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at 12:00pm at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main St, Woodstock, GA 30188. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Col. Poynter will be laid to rest with full military honors at Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA following the funeral service at 2:00pm.
