It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shelby Jean Childers, age 87, who left this world on February 13, 2025. Born on August 24, 1937, in Tazewell, Virginia to Harvey George and Marty Irene Crabtree. Shelby lived a life rich in love, laughter, and adventure, surrounded by family and friends who cherished her.
Shelby was married to a retired Air Force service member, embodying the essence of perseverance and resilience throughout her husband’s career. Their shared commitment to family and community defined their life together, as they traversed many terrains and created lifelong memories through their travels.
A passionate lover of fine dining, Shelby often found joy and fulfillment in the kitchen, where her culinary skills brought her loved ones together around the table. Her gift for crafting delicious meals mirrored her nurturing spirit; each dish was prepared with love, showcasing her great appreciation for the art of cooking and the comfort it brought to her loved ones.
As the middle child in a family of seven, Shelby was lovingly nicknamed “Snake Eyes” by her brother Don—a testament to her playful yet intuitive nature. While she enjoyed the vigor of her youth, Shelby remained dedicated to staying fit and healthy.
Shelby had an extraordinary ability to take life at her own pace, reminding us of all to appreciate each moment. Her warmth, generosity, and calm presence will be deeply missed by family and friends alike.
Shelby was preceded in death by her husband Edward Dale Childers; her son Keith Barry Childers; her father Harvey George Crabtree and her mother Marty Irene Crabtree; her sister Ruth Remines; her brother Donald Crabtree; her sister Ella Mae Pennington and her sister Dixie England; her grandson Taylor Ortman.
Shelby is survived by her daughter Sherry Jean Childers; and her son John Alan Childers; her brother William Crabtree and her sister Brenda Sue Turner, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A service for Shelby will be held Monday, March 24, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Georgia.
