Robert ‘Bob’ Earle Sherrer, 70, of Acworth, GA, lost his fight with cancer on October 15, 2014. In true patriotic spirit, he was born on July 4, 1944, in Washington, GA, to the late Robert Franklin and Mabel Psalmond Sherrer. He graduated from Douglas County High School in 1962 and went on to receive an Associate of Arts from Young Harris College in 1965, located in one of his most beloved places – the North Georgia mountains. Bob graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and remained an enthusiastic and proud Bulldogs fan throughout his lifetime.
Following college, he served in the United States Army, where he was awarded expert marksmanship badges for both rifle and grenade. Bob managed dairy plants for many years and worked as the Agriculture Manager of the Food Safety Division in the Georgia Department of Agriculture for the subsequent 15 years, until his retirement in 2006. He was also actively involved with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, inspecting nuclear power plants in the Southeast, helping with security during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and aiding with other disasters – all of those Georgia tornadoes – throughout his tenure.
During his youth, he spent much time on his grandparents’ farm, both fishing and hunting everything in sight; he was always an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed teaching his children to appreciate these essential parts of him. He instilled his great love of the outdoors in his family, going camping almost every weekend as soon as the weather was warm enough, mainly throughout the Southeast, most especially at Lake Allatoona in northwestern Georgia and Lake Winfield Scott in Suches, Georgia. Bob always found tranquility in the outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Susan Lavaughn Norris Sherrer, who he married in September of 1967.
Bob is survived by his four children and three grandchildren; sons, Kevin and his wife Carrie, Keith and his partner Kendra, and William; his only daughter, Lynn; granddaughters, Madison, Hannah, and Hope; his partner Linda Blackwell; and his mini dachshund, Oscar. The family will receive friends on Monday, October 20, 2014, from 6-8 pm at Woodstock Funeral Home, Woodstock, GA, and military honors will be rendered at 7 pm.
Arrangements under the direction of Woodstock Funeral Home, Woodstock, GA.
