A native Atlantan, born in 1925 to Ora Lee and Drury Wood of Atlanta, Georgia, she graduated from Girl’s High, then Georgia State College for Women in 1948, and later earned both her Masters and Doctorate from Georgia State University.
Mildred taught at Grady High and at Roosevelt High, where she met her future husband Spec. She continued her teaching career at Georgia State and Savannah State and retired as Professor Emeritus after many years as a professor at Kennesaw State, where she worked side-by-side with Spec, who was KSU’s Athletic Director. When Mildred and Spec retired to Franklin, NC, she became a member, dedicated volunteer, and patron of the Friends of the Library there for many years.
Though reserved and thoughtful with a wonderful sense of humor, she was fiercely protective of family and all those she loved. She leaves an empty place in our hearts and lives and will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Spec Landrum, and is survived by her daughter Laura, and son James with his wife Amy; three grandchildren, Michael, Mitchell and his wife Karson, and Ava with her husband Ben; and five great-grandchildren, Maya, Kayla, Chase, Siena and Rosemary.
A small private memorial service will be held for family. If you’re looking for a cause to support, we ask that donations be made to Cobb County Animal Services at https://www.cobbcounty.org/public-safety/animal-services/adoption
