John was born on August 9, 1950 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was one of six children. John was adopted and maintained life-long relationships with his siblings whom he loved dearly.
As an adult, John had lived in Kennesaw, Georgia and retired in Woodstock, Georgia were he resided for over 45 years.
John was a faithful, devoted man of strength and kindness. He had a generous spirit and lived to serve others. He first served his country during the Vietnam War as a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and later in the 75th Ranger Regiment. He was a decorated hero receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one campaign star, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Overseas Service Bar, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Army Commendation Medal.
John walked strongly in his faith in the Lord and had obtained a Masters in Biblical Studies. Often called “Preacher,” John humbly served in various capacities including prison ministries, street ministries to care for the homeless and shut in ministries to reach out to those in nursing homes. He also taught a Senior Sunday School Class at his home church, Eastwood Baptist, and enjoyed singing bass in the church choir.
John was a loving, caring and faithful husband and was the best father – he served as a great role model for his children and through lessons shared and by example, he showed his sons how to be good men. He took vacation and sick days to support his children during their sport events. He also taught them to be slow to anger and to have a positive outlook on life. Something amazing that John shared with his sons was a contagious sense of humor and ability to share joy with others.
John was known by many names: Johnny, Preacher, Warrior and Dad. After his family grew to include six grandchildren, he gained his favorite title as “Paw Paw.” The grandchildren could tell anyone about John’s ability to never meet a stranger, his love of John Wayne westerns, always wearing his “flag shirts” and giving the best hugs.
