Inez was born March 2, 1927 in Auckland, New Zealand. She was the epitome of strength and beauty - at 17 years old, in the midst of WWII, Inez married a young Marine soldier, George Andrew Smith Jr. Shortly thereafter, she boarded a troop ship, arrived in Los Angeles, CA, then making her way to Jeffersonville, IN. Within days of arriving to her new home, Inez had her first born, Drew. The family began their lives together in Jeffersonville, Indiana and later settled in Orange County, California. Their family grew to include their daughter, Judy, and son, Vernon.
Inez had many joys in life including her love of line dancing, sewing, knitting and gardening. She also had a passion for travel and regularly visited New Zealand, Europe and over the United States. Inez was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fullerton as well as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Orange, California.
Inez Thompson Smith is preceded in death by her parents, Percy Thompson and Jessie Winchester Thompson; husband, George Andrew Smith Jr; daughter, Judith "Judy" Marie Portillo; and her life partner, Walt Westpheling.
Her memory will be cherished by her sons, Vernon Smith and his wife, Linda, and George "Drew" Smith and his wife, Pamela; 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at 10:00 AM at Fairhaven Memorial Park, 1702 Fairhaven Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705 with a burial to follow.
