Gordon Lake Brewer, Jr., Major USAF (Ret), of Woodstock, Georgia, formerly of Ellijay, was born in Dalton, Georgia, on January 20, 1943. He spent most of his early years around Crandall, Georgia, and graduated from Murray County High School in 1961. He then attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia, where he met his future wife, Martha Lucile Johnson. They wed in December, 1965, and after graduation, Gordon joined the U.S. Air Force, where he spent 20 years as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer before retiring in 1987. After retirement from the Air Force, he enjoyed 10 years of coaching Little League Baseball and shared many happy hours with his son Jason on those teams. He also was a Sunday School teacher for several years in different locations where the family was stationed with the military, and during that time he served as a deacon in some of the Baptist churches where his family attended.
Besides coaching Little League, he loved other sports, particularly the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Going to Braves games with Jason was one of his joys. During those years he also did a lot of woodworking, and he built many items for the home. In later years after retiring to Ellijay, he developed an interest in woodturning and was a member of the Apple Ridge Woodturners Club. One of his pleasures was making ballpoint pens and giving them to various special people in his life. Camping with the family and friends was always another activity which brought him great pleasure because just being out in nature was rejuvenating.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha, of Woodstock, and his son, Jason and his wife Ashley, of Marietta, as well as extended family of several nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunt. He will be remembered by his many friends as a kind and generous person of integrity who had a unique ability to make people around him feel better because of his jovial and compassionate spirit. He was a positive influence on those who knew him.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory may be made to either of his two favorite charities: Samaritan's Purse or Tunnel To Towers Foundation.
