'FRED' WALTER McINTYRE, WWII Veteran, age 99, passed away at his home in Valdosta, Georgia on September 21, 2022. He was born 4 August, 1923 in Lebanon, Georgia (Cherokee County), he was a duel resident of Nash County, Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and his primary residence was in Lowndes County, Valdosta, Georgia.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta, Rev. Dr. Glenda Hollingshead, Pastor.
He was a Master Mason of Queen City Lodge No. 602, Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Ambassador at Large Hasan Shriners Temple No. 162, Albany Georgia and Yorkrite for over 60 years. He began his Federal career as a Civilian Radio Technician and Aircraft Communicator 11 May 1942 at Butler/Albany, Ga. He was a certified Airway Weather Reporter/Meteorologist, radiotelegraph and radiotelephone technician under Dept. of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration (now FAA) to work communication facilities and air navigation.
Due to the Pearl Harbor attack and substantial loss of life, In 1942 he was loaned to the U. S. Navy from Civil Aeronautics Administration under the War Service Appointment Executive order 9063. He was appointed as a civilian for the duration of WWII since a shortage of communication operators was acute.
He was transferred to Raleigh, NC in 1944. He built radios, sent Morse Code messages to Europe/Pacific, was air traffic controller for planes thru Raleigh, those pilots then flew to Bangor Maine to fuel so they could fly overseas for D-Day Invasion. He was saddened knowing those pilots he spoke to may not return from that war, he recalled that he said prayers for them all.
He then worked under the Naval Air Facility 22 May 1945 as an Overseas Communicator and instructor in Rio De Janeiro and Belem, Brazil, then onto U.S. Naval Operating Base in Bermuda 4 July 1945 through 13 November 1947, where he also obtained his pilot’s license.
He returned to his Civil service career with Civil Aeronautics Administration until 14 January 1949 when he was then inducted into the Army of the U.S., (RCT McIntyre) Company H, Eleventh Infantry. On 24 January 1950 he was transferred to Raleigh NC Reserve Component (PFC, SigC-Ready Res). He was Honorably Discharged 7 July 1954.
Along with his civil service career he worked throughout the 1950's installing Air Conditioning in businesses, started a dry cleaners business in 1953 and a diaper service in Rocky Mount, NC. From 1960's to 1980's he dealt in estate sales, business liquidations and surplus auctions. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Dept. of Transportation in January 1981 with 38 years.
He was predeceased by his Mother, "Mary Bell" Manous-McIntyre-Martin of Marietta, GA; Father, John Walter "Brake" McIntyre of Marietta, GA, Brothers: "Harold" Bailey McIntyre of Acworth, GA, Joseph Charles "JC" McIntyre of Marietta, GA, Sister "Shelby" McIntyre-Shelmet of Marietta, GA, Nephew: Joseph C. McIntyre II of Douglasville, GA.
He is survived by his loving family who will miss him terribly:

and a host of nieces, nephews and sorrowing friends.
A visitation for Fred will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Woodstock Funeral Home, 8855 Main Street, Woodstock, GA 30188, followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.
