Alan was born in Roanoke, Virginia in 1956. As an undergraduate, Alan majored in economics and history at North Carolina State University. He then received a Master’s in Natural Resource Economics from Iowa State University. He obtained a Master’s in City Planning and Transportation Engineering and a Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley.
Alan worked as a Senior Economist at the NYC Independent Budget Office for nearly 25 years. Before then, he was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.
For almost 25 years, Alan and Doris were active members of Christ Lutheran Church. Alan loved music, sang in numerous choirs, and enjoyed listening to classical music and jazz in his free time. He was excellent at languages, speaking Spanish fluently, loved reading and was an excellent cook and baker.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Elizabeth and his sister, Anne. Alan is survived by his wife, Doris, daughter and son-in-law, Elsa and Gustavo, son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Tatum, niece, Sarah, and nephew, Hunter.
A viewing will be held on Friday, September 29th from 5-8 PM at Christ Lutheran Church. On Saturday, September 30th, there will be a memorial service at 9AM at Christ Lutheran Church, a burial ceremony at 11AM at Mount Olivet Cemetery, and a reception at noon at Christ Lutheran Church. In remembrance, flowers are welcome, or donations may be made to Christ Lutheran Church in Woodside, New York.
