"I've got a couple of buildings." That's how Shmerykowsky Consulting Engineers Principal John Shmerykowsky, P.E. summed up his career in a 2012 interview with Untapped New York. Mr. Shmerykowsky was not one to boast. But walk past the buildings that he engineered as partner-in-charge of the structural engineering firm Weiskopf & Pickworth - walk past 120 Park Avenue or 33 Maiden Lane, walk past the AT&T Long Lines building or 750 7th Avenue - you'll see that this was a man whose work will be with us, and with New York City, for many, many years to come. What you won't see, is that Mr. Shmerykowsky was also a great teacher, a great friend, and, above all, a great father.
Mr. Shmerykowsky began his career in the early 60s after graduating from the University of Miami and a period spent studying at the prestigious Fontainebleau in Paris. He had studied architectural engineering in college, but gravitated toward the structural engineering side of the profession. As a partner of Weiskopf & Pickworth, he led projects up and down the East Coast in addition to his work on the aforementioned NYC high-rises. In 1996, he founded Shmerykowsky Consulting Engineers.
At his new firm, Mr. Shmerykowsky was soon joined by his son, Marco Shmerykowsky, an accomplished structural engineer in his own right. Together, this father-son team engineered countless
projects Over the course of 20 years, they built a company that a diverse group of clients that have come to rely on for its unique combination of world-class structural engineering services and personal attention.
John Shmerykowsky was beloved by his colleagues, his friends, and his family. So if you're ever walking past 33 Maiden Lane or 750 7th Avenue, remember that these aren't just "a couple of buildings" as Mr. Shmerykowsky put it - they're the legacy of great man. A great man who will be missed.
He was also a great fan of traveling, exploring and being active. As a member of the Carpathian Ski Club, he competed in their annual social races and made sure to enjoy every ski season. Whether is was playing tennis, hiking in the woods, swimming, biking, walking or fishing, John loved being active and living life to it's fullest. He grew up on Long Island's south shore beaches and held a life long loved
of the water and the beaches - whether they were in New York or Miami or anywhere else.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
