Inez Matella Grant was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies, to John Joseph Grant and Rosa Grant on May 9, 1926. She immigrated to the United States in December 1944 at the age of eighteen, residing on W. 117th Street in Harlem. While living in Harlem, Inez earned her high school diploma from Harlem Evening High School, and also received a Dental Assistants' Certificate from the Manhattan Dental Assistants' School. In April 1952 Inez became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Also in April of 1952, Inez married Clifford Eversley, and they remained married for over forty eight years until their bond was broken by Clifford's passing in December 2000. Their son Earl, their only child, was born in February 1953. In March 1953, Inez and Clifford relocated to Long Island City, Queens. Following a brief hospital stay in October 2011, Inez was relocated to the Sarah Neuman Nursing Home in Mamaroneck, NY, where she resided until the time of her passing.
Inez worked part-time at Alexander's Department Store on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan from 1974 until the chain went out of business in 1992. She enjoyed cooking and celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family. She loved hearing good news involving her family and would offer words of encouragement when made aware of a family member going through a tough time. Inez was a very proud and independent-thinking woman who believed in doing-for-self and paying her own way.
During her stay at Sarah Neuman, Inez enjoyed and looked forward to Sunday church service, and was a regular participant in their drum circles, her cowbell keeping everyone on point. The residents and staff were very fond of her.
Inez made her peaceful transition from this earth realm on Monday, May 12th, 2014. She is survived by her son, Earl Francis Eversley Sr.; her daughter-in-law Anita Gladys Eversley; grandsons Earl Francis Jr., Keith Gerard, and Alan Clifford; her great grandson Sean Ethan; her great granddaughter Kristin Gabrielle; and a host of friends and acquaintances.
Arrangements under the direction of Morisco Funeral Home, Long Island City, NY.
