Hines. Helen was the oldest of seven children - Etta, Susan, Maxine, Hosea Jr., Edward, and Michael. Her
parents and daughter Beverly preceded her in death. She was a proud graduate of Risley High School,
class of 1961. Following graduation, she moved to New York to live with her grandmother, Oriebell
Hines.
Mother Helen was joined in Holy Matrimony to Eddie Albert Edmonds, who preceded her in death.
Together, they raised two daughters: Beverly Stevens & Tracy Edmonds.
Mother Helen accepted Christ at an early age attending and being baptized at St Paul Baptist Church in
Brunswick Georgia. After moving to New York, she joined Safe Haven UCC Church under the leadership
of Reverend Doctor Ruby Wilson. Helen worked faithfully in the church doing whatever she could to
help the church grow. She worked on the Hospitality committee and served as a member on the church
governing board. She became the mother of the church in 2019.
Mother Helen began working at Gimbels while attending college for social work. After determining she
needed a career change, she worked for the Board of Education and then for the New York Police
Department. She was a secretary for the detective unit at the 114th precinct in Astoria, Queens for 30+
years until her retirement. She loved music and traveling. She was a social butterfly with many
organizations – the Red Hat Society, the grandparents' group, and the Eastern Stars. She would often call to see about members, pray for them and do all that she could to help.
Helen was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She departed this world on April 25,
2023, to be with her creator – leaving to cherish her memory: her daughter, Tracy Edmonds; her
granddaughters, Shiretta Mitchell, LaShawnda Edmonds Jones Russ (Michael Russ) and Teyanna
Bennett; her grandson, Gerrod Heard Jr; her great-grandchildren, Zyaria Mitchell, Josiah Edmonds Jones, and Xailen Heard; sisters, Etta Hines-Bute (Bill Bute), Susan Hines, Maxine Watkins; brothers - Hosea Hines Jr, Edward Hines (Roberta Hines), Michael Reddings and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
