Our beloved Hazel J. Jones departed this earthly life on December 17, 2017. Hazel the daughter of Amanda Perry, was born in Elloree, South Carolina.
Hazel or Auntie as she liked to be called came to New York City in 1927. After graduating high school she attended Hunter College School of Nursing.
Known for her mastery skills in knitting, Hazel made clothing for the babies of family and friends for decades. She loved traveling and exploring the world. Seeing other lands worldwide brought her excitement and joy. She was the Comptroller for Local 1199 SEIU primarily during the 1950’s and 1960’s, It was rare in that era to see a woman and an African American in such an important position, and she was the first.
Hazel Perry married Robert Jones in 1960. They remained married for 29 years until his death in 1979.
Hazel joined St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, and was an active and beloved parishioner. She often volunteered for fundraisers and performed readings of the scriptures on Sunday.
Her generosity, and most of all her smile was a beacon that lit up all those that were in her presence. Her independence and dedication was a model for everyone to follow.
Hazel will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives she touched. Most of all, she will be missed by family and close friends who loved her dearly.
We thank God for blessing us with Hazel’s presence in our lives.
We thank God for blessing Hazel
We praise God who loved her best
