Alfonso (“Al”) Martino was born on July 14, 1926, in Astoria, Queens. He passed away peacefully on April 21, 2018, at the age of 91. Beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Al is pre-deceased by his twin brother, Genaro; two younger brothers, John and Anthony; and his sister, Martha. He is survived by brothers Joseph Martino, Stephen Martino, James DiMartino, and sister Rose Gregorio. Sisters-in-law include Lila Martino, Elaine Martino, and Jean DiMartino, respectively. He has twenty-two nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Campaign and was stationed 1944-1946 in Hawaii. Al is best remembered by family and friends for always putting family first, his outgoing personality, sense of humor, storytelling, and his generous spirit in always helping others. He was a well-known figure in Astoria—many friends and associates called him “The Mayor of Steinway Street.” The lives Al touched and the memories we have of him will be cherished in our hearts forever. Viewing will be held on Friday, April 27, from 4-8 pm at Thomas M. Quinn & Sons Funeral Home in Astoria. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 28, at 10:30 am at Most Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church in Astoria, with burial immediately following at St John’s Cemetery.
